MFA IN FIBRE AND SCULPTURE

cranbrook ART ACADEMY

1983 /   TO   /  1984

The Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, founded in 1932, is one of America's leading schools for architecture, art, and design. After going to the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad (NID) Kinnari was sponsored by Jack Lenor Larsen, a textile designer, author, collector and promoter of traditional and contemporary craftsmanship to attend Cranbrook.

At Cranbrook, Kinnari used the techniques of tie-dye, ikat and masharu weaves that she had learned in Kutch and created fabrics that were woven with wires and cloth, enabling them to be bent and moulded into three dimensional sculptural forms...

Kinnari's work seamlessly bridged the traditional crafts of Kutch with western high art.

She will eventually use her training in Kutch and at Cranbrook for her coterie collection in the next phase of her work.
